One man, one crazy-assed building, no, it's a castle.
Built by Jim Bishop, started in the late 60's, and now open and free to the public to explore and climb.
Jim is sick now, so much of the construction has stopped.
This place, think King Arthur's Camelot, is so very special and eerie at the same time.
Jim, it seems was unsuccessfully prosecuted years ago for building it. The courts scratched and scrambled to come up with a reason he should stop building it.
Building went on, and on, and on and still unfinished it now stands in what I thought was the middle of nowhere.
By 1996 he had completed the main area of the building and had only constructed the smallest tower. Even the dragon was built and installed years later.
Pictures tell the story and as you know, I'm big on architecture. So for me this was a treat, from the wrought iron work, the masonry, to the super tall towers and even the iron gate poised for closing under the carriage/gate house.
All that and then come to find he rents it out for weddings. The large hall could definitely house a crowded 'come to Jesus' meeting.
